Wasp and hornet nest removal

Wasp and hornet nests usually appear under roofs, in roller shutters, attics, wall cavities and in the ground. Wasps and hornets defend their nest and can attack in swarms, and stings are especially dangerous for children and people allergic to venom. When nests appear

A nest is started in spring by a single queen, so in May and June it is still small and easy to miss. The colony grows over the summer and is largest in late summer and early autumn, when a single nest can hold several thousand wasps. That is also when wasps are most restless, looking for sweet food around terraces, bins and fruit trees. The earlier a nest is removed, the quicker and safer the job.

Wasps, hornets or bees?

Wasps are smaller, shiny and distinctly yellow and black. Hornets are much larger, brown and yellow, and are also active at night, so they are drawn to lights on terraces and in the house. Bees are hairy and brown, and a bee swarm is not a nest that should be destroyed – for a bee swarm, contact a beekeeper. How we work

We come out as soon as possible. A technician in protective gear treats the nest with an approved product and then removes it. Nests in hard-to-reach places are treated without demolition and with no risk to your household or neighbours. Wasps that were away from the nest during treatment return and die over the following hours, so it is normal to see a few around the spot for a short while.

What to do while you wait

• do not try to remove, burn or spray the nest yourself
• keep children and pets away from where the wasps fly in and out
• close windows and doors near the nest
• do not block the hole the wasps use – they may look for another way out, towards the inside of the house
• if you are stung and have difficulty breathing or facial swelling, seek medical help immediately
