Snake removal

Snakes usually enter buildings, yards and holiday homes in search of food and shelter. Venomous species such as the nose-horned viper live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so an encounter with a snake should not be handled on your own. The most common snakes

The venomous species found here are the nose-horned viper and the common European adder. The nose-horned viper is greyish or brown, with a dark zigzag pattern along its back and a distinctive “horn” on the tip of its snout. The adder is smaller and more common in higher, mountainous areas. Non-venomous snakes, such as the grass snake and the Aesculapian snake, are much more common and are useful because they hunt rodents. They are hard for a layperson to tell apart, so treat every snake as if it were venomous.

When snakes are active

Snakes are active from spring to autumn, most of all on warm days in late spring and summer. They spend the winter hidden in cracks, under stones and in underground cavities. Near houses they usually stay in tall grass, piles of wood and stone, dry-stone walls, sheds and basements.

How to keep snakes away

• mow the grass regularly and clear dense vegetation next to the building
• remove piles of wood, stones and building materials from near the house
• seal openings and cracks in foundations, walls and around pipes
• control rodents – mice and rats are the main food source for snakes, so rodent control is often the best protection against snakes too

If you are bitten by a snake

• stay calm and move as little as possible
• remove rings, watches and tight clothing from the bitten limb and keep it still
• do not cut the wound, suck out the venom or apply a tourniquet
• call an ambulance on 124 straight away or go to the nearest medical facility
